archimedes at the wedge
two sumo size guys sitting with
the great stillness of the huge
are joined by another giant
with ugly hair & no definition
big lower lip many years at the beach
& a fourth large mostly muscled
guy with the best hung-over drawl
about the tangle of the last few
days’ parties, and these gentlemen
misshapen to various degrees are
deferred to by the trim and the
more perfectly physical.
as
only a wall of giant rocks
could withstand the power and
the angle of a serious wave and redirect
it further along to create a
double angle peak that
cantilevers above the shore.
nearby families demolish
boxes of donuts. a guy with
stitches shows up. one of the
sumos has disappeared
until he shoots
across a short high left face
half his body out of the water
holding up the world
he is a part of.

no mama luke
tanana threw beebees
till he blew out his arm,
came back slower and wiser,
pitched the most beautiful game
i’ve seen, one day
in anaheim,
nobody was afraid up there,
they just couldn’t time him,
couldn’t solve his lefty style,
he twisted, stretched,
missteps combined too late
with changes of bat speed.
from behind third
it was a lesson in the
higher continuums, the
big a was unintrusive,
there was a certain infield
clarity. old men smoked
cigars.

art art art
donovan i’m talking about
fat crewcut guy from the colts
my childhood team
large bit player
in immortal johnny u comebacks
and solid enough personality
to come through decades later on tv
though the stories tend
to seem a bit polished
credit him that even that doesn’t tarnish
the essence of his old bullshit line
those guys were drinking 20+ beers in a setting
& smoking a couple luckies with each one
& instead of ’roids
they had straight red meat
& a non ball player
of non exceptional bulk
may not have necessarily have had
a public good time in their presence
for sports thrills i trade that
but i’m not totally comfortable
with the term for
wimpy qbs he uses which is
surfer
there is size of wave
and in half of what the best
get out in art big man
you can dial up and call
mama
